As a recently judged Outstanding school (13th and 14th July 2017) Thorpe Hesley Primary School are proud to share their practice via CPD sessions..
These sessions are aimed to give practical support to colleagues from other settings, linked to our outstanding judgement and showcasing areas we feel others may be interested to further develop in their own settings.
Whilst we do not feel we have all the answers, and by no means are we intending to say we have everything right, we do feel we can offer practical advice and support in areas endorsed by our recent Ofsted visitors

Sharing Outstanding practice at Thorpe Hesley Primary School, Rotherham

Thorpe Hesley Primary School had a two day inspection by 3 Ofsted inspectors including an HMI in July 2017. As a result the school was judged outstanding in all areas. We are now in a position to share our good practice with others and enable colleagues to come in and see what made our school so successful. Sessions are from 9.00 to 11.45 am or 1.00 to 3.45 pm and include refreshments on arrival and at break. They are held in Thorpe Hesley Primary School, Junior Building Meeting Room.

Sessions will include, where suitable, looking at existing practice in school, enabling participants to see practice actually happening and judge impact.

Title:  001 – Maths – it’s a Mission Impossible.

Date: 17/01/2018   9.00 to 11.45 am

Come along and see how we have developed our approach to reasoning in maths in line with current expectations. Since launching our Mission Impossible initiative, pupils’ confidence and perseverance when tackling new maths challenges has greatly improved. Children are positive and enthusiastic about maths lessons and this compliments a hard-working environment. Reasoning skills are vital to achievement and our increased success in mathematics attainment is largely due to this element. Our Mission Impossible approach ensures there is a strong and consistent approach to reasoning through school– enabling SLT to monitor and measure impact effectively. You will see the approach in action in classes and have the opportunity to discuss how this flexible initiative could be utilised in your own setting.

Title:  002 – Reading that gets results

 Date: 24/01/2018 9.00 to 11.45 am  
This session will look at how our school approaches the teaching of reading in KS1 and KS2.

Our development of the teaching of reading has had a great impact on our SATs results and the use of class texts and whole-class reading were key to this.

During this session, you will have the opportunity to observe a number of different reading sessions, look at the way we plan whole-class reading sessions in order to develop questioning and discussion receive information about how this works alongside our novel study work in literacy.

Reading is something that we are passionate about as a school and we know that our teaching strategies are effective.

Title:  003– Maths – pre-learning.

Date: 31/01/2018  9.00 to 11.45 am
Come along and see how we have developed our approach to pre-learning for children. This session will provide a number of strategies which teachers and support staff can use to close identified gaps in learning. You will have the opportunity to see, in action, the use of pre-learning strategies to target individual pupils or groups prior to a maths lesson and the following lesson in action. Also to discuss the benefits of pre-learning and how it can be applied in everyday practice. See how pre-learning can be used as a whole school initiative and be successful in both key stages 1 and 2.

This will be a one session event.

Title:  004 - Building an Outstanding EYFS.

Dates: 01/02/2018 and 20/02/2018 and 11/04/2018 9.00 to 11.45 am 
Three sessions looking at indoor environments, outdoor provision and creating an Outstanding curriculum which gives children opportunities for learning at all levels. After seeing our Outstanding provision for F1 and F2 children, you will be given practical advice and ideas to enable you to create opportunities in your own setting. There will be chance for discussion with colleagues and experienced staff and we can guarantee that you will go away enthused and encouraged.

This will be a three session event, enabling colleagues to carry out inter session tasks and implement ideas between dates. 
Cost £120 per attendee for three sessions.

Title:  005- It’s not all English and Maths - history

Dates: 06/02/2018 1.00 to 3.45 pm
This fun and exciting session looks at how settings can make the most of learning in subjects other than English and Maths. Although those core subjects are undeniably vital to success, a well-rounded curriculum also gives great importance to foundation subjects too. Come along for some practical ideas to teach history, see learning in action and take time to look at real life teaching of the subject and its outcomes. Excellent foundation subject teaching contributes to success in the core curriculum too.

This will be a one session event.

Title:  006 - Effective leadership, developing understanding.

Date: 23/02/2018 9.00 to 11.45 am
This session looks at how our outstanding Senior Leadership Team (SLT) work, monitoring teaching and learning, holding others to account, creating Action Plans and keeping records to support school improvement. Members of SLT will share their Position Statements and how these were created and utilised to further practice in school.

This will be a one session event.

Title:  007 - It’s not all English and Maths - geography

Date: 27/02/2018 1.00 to 3.45 pm

Title:  008 – Let’s look at vulnerable pupils

Date: 20/03/2018 1.00 to 3.45 pm
This session will share how our Vulnerable Pupil Leader, as part of our SENDCo / Inclusion Team leads actions for staff to ensure Pupil Premium and top and bottom 20% children strive to reach their full potential. You will be able to see our Vulnerable Pupil team in action as well as look at systems for monitoring and tracking and discuss how these are used and how they may help you to look at your own provision.

This will be a one session event.

Title:  009 – Loving our learning environment

Date: 12/04/2018 9.00 to 11.45 am
As an outstanding school, our learning environment is key. We believe that celebration of pupil work and achievement has great impact and contributes towards our ethos for learning.

This session is an opportunity to look around both buildings and investigate the factors which have contributed to our success. Our learning environment is noticeably effective at supporting learning and celebrating work.

You will have a chance to look at classrooms, corridors and other areas and see why Ofsted were so complimentary.

This will be a one session event.

Title:  010 – SEND Provision including use of support staff, assessment & the Graduated Response

Date: 28/02/2018 1.00 to 3.45 pm

Come along and see how we have developed our provision within school to ensure a Graduated Response as outlined in the SEND Code of Practice. As part of this course, there will be the opportunity to see interventions and in-class support in action and observe how every opportunity is taken, such as pre-learning and post-learning, to ensure that teachers and teaching assistants are fully equipped to support pupils well in their learning. The session will explore how we use the ‘assess, plan, do, review’ cycle, promoted by  the SEND Code of Practice 0-25, to meet the needs of children and young people and improve policy and practice within our setting, ensuring provision meets the needs of children with SEN.

There will also be the opportunity to explore how leaders of SEND track progress and attainment within school as well as sharing our Ofsted experience.   Within our setting, both SENCOs/ Inclusion Managers have the mandatory qualification and have been accredited with the National SEN Award.
